How was everyone’s weekend?
Today’s post is about grocery shopping..incase you couldn’t tell from the title..hahhh
I know everyone has their own way of Grocery shopping, but I get asked a lot how I manage to cook all of the things I do without spending a TON of money on food and groceries. So I thought I would share some tips that hopefully will be helpful!
Meal plan, shmeal plan right? It might seem a little tedious to figure out what you are going to do for meals during the week, but I promise you it really is not challenging or time consuming and will save you SO much money! I normally choose 3 meals to make on non-consecutive days of the week, and use the other days for leftovers.
Since I love to cook, I always like to think about certain recipes I want to make for the next week. But, the meal plans don’t need to be recipes, they can just be ideas such as, chicken with veggies, pizza, pasta with veggies, etc. I also try to plan meals that involve some of the same ingredients (in the list above it says butternut squash soup, but I ended up making tortellini soup instead). The soup and baked pasta both used onions and zucchini, which means I save money buying more of the same ingredient.
Buy what’s on sale!
This might seem pretty obvious, but buying what is on sale, and store brand products makes shopping so much cheaper. When I go to make my list for the week, I look through the paper to see what is on sale and try to base what produce or other staples we need (such as rice, beans, etc) based by what brands are on sale. Normally store brand items are always discounted.
Only buy what you need!
It is so easy to rush to the store, without looking through the fridge to see what items you are really out of and need to buy. Buying only what you need will not only save money, but will reduce the amount of waste!
I could definitely make my grocery shopping bill cheaper if I clipped out coupons, but without coupon clipping, and just going by these 3 tips I spend on average between 45-60$/week. Since I’m an amazing mathematician (loll) that is roughly 3$ per meal! I limit my going out to eat to once a week, if that, and make all of my own coffee (lies, but most days I make my own!..damn you starbucks!) at home.
So now that I’ve shared my tips, I will share what some of our staple items are and some of my favorite go-to meals!
Bananas, Apples, tomatoes, baby carrots, cucumber, sweet potatoes, peppers, and some kind of squash normally.(right now spaghetti squash and butternut squash since they are currently in season)
Brown rice, quinoa, pasta, canned beans (black beans and garbanzo beans), jarred marinara sauce, cereal, oats(DUH), crackers, rice cakes, chocolate chips:), dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, etc), salad dressings, olive oil, green tea, coffee
cottage cheese, string cheese, almond milk, eggs, goat cheese, shredded mozzarella cheese
chicken breasts (buying family sized packages and freezing saves a TON of money), veggie burgers, frozen veggies (edamame, broccoli, spinach, peas, etc), ice cream or frozen yogurt,
vodka what? of course not:)
I may be forgetting some things, but this is just to give you an idea!
now onto my favorite go-to meals! these are meals I eat for breakfast, lunch, or dinner
Eggs and veggies (using 1 egg and 2 egg whites, and whatever veggies I have) with a sweet potato (microwaved) and hummus
Quinoa veggie bowls
Wraps with veggies alongside
and of course oatmeal
